This is my honest attempt to answer that question simply — not by smoothing over the genuine complexity in the research, but by being clear about what the evidence actually shows, where the uncertainty is, and what I have found to be true in my own body over years of paying careful attention.
Why Protein Matters More Now

This requires more careful planning but is achievable.
Where the Uncertainty Is
The protein research in midlife women specifically is less comprehensive than it should be. Many foundational studies were conducted in men or in mixed populations that did not report sex-disaggregated results. The protein targets cited here reflect the best available evidence and the clinical experience of practitioners who work extensively with this population. They are not settled science in every detail.
What is settled is the directional finding: most women in midlife are eating less protein than the evidence supports for muscle health and longevity, and the gap between current intake and optimal intake has meaningful consequences for body composition, metabolic health, and functional capacity.
